What You Need to Know - EMDR Therapy

Joy Eidse, Registered Social Worker, breaks down the incredible therapeutic approach known as EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing.

I’ve been working in the mental health field for about 10 years. While there are many amazing resources and therapeutic approaches that I’ve seen that help people immensely, I’ve seen the most dramatic changes as a result of EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing).

EMDR therapy involves several stages including: assessment, resourcing (making sure there are no gaps in information that might be helpful for whatever symptoms clients are experiencing), and then creating a treatment plan based on the symptoms a client is finding most problematic.

The treatment plan often involves looking at past events that may be unresolved and contributing to the present problems. The next step is the reprocessing work. This happens in longer sessions with the goal of decreasing distress related to past events, finding resolution/healing for those experiences, and planning for ways to integrate new ways of thinking and understanding oneself and others into future events and situations that previously would have caused distress or unhelpful behaviours.

EMDR is considered on par with exposure therapy for PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and is used to address a variety of symptoms, unhelpful behaviours or reoccurring patterns.
