Your clinical psychologist

Dr. Margaret Penfold, C. Psych.

“Hello there! I am excited to have this opportunity to continue to serve my community and to join this multi-disciplinary clinic. It is my honour and pleasure to be able to offer you time and hold space with you for this part of your journey.

I believe that setting the stage for a collaborative therapeutic relationship and honouring the client as the expert about their life and challenges are core pieces of working effectively in psychotherapy. I blend this client centered approach with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) approaches, which are applicable to many of the common difficulties that lead people to seek psychological services.

I have over ten years of experience working with clients across adults aged 18 to 65 years with a range of mental health, physical health, and adjustment difficulties in the public health system and private practice settings. My specific areas of experience and expertise include adjustment concerns (e.g., career and life changes, chronic illness, etc.), anxiety (generalized anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, social anxiety), depression, emotional dysregulation, grief, insomnia, nightmares, obsessive compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and substance use problems.

I am a member of the following professional associations: Association for Contextual Behavioral Science, Canadian Psychological Association, and Manitoba Psychological Society.

I am currently registered as a psychologist with the Psychological Association of Manitoba.”

Dr. Penfold has appointments available for individuals aged 18 to 65 at our Corydon Avenue location.

Please note: Dr. Penfold is not currently accepting new clients.

  • Starting June 2024, Dr. Penfold will be offering pre-surgical psychological assessments for trans people seeking gender affirming surgeries. She has been an approved mental health service provider for completing these assessments with Manitoba Health since 2019.

Although Manitoba Health covers the cost of gender affirming surgeries for eligible people (where the surgery has been recommended by both an approved health care professional and an approved mental health professional), the cost of completing the pre-surgical psychological assessment with a private practice psychologist (Dr. Penfold) would not be covered by Manitoba Health.

Detailed receipts are provided and can be used to seek reimbursement from your health benefits plan if that is part of your coverage. We recommend that you confirm what your health benefits plan covers ahead of time. The total cost of the assessment is dependent on the time it takes to complete it (hours * billable rate) – this would be discussed further at the time of the free phone consultation.

  • Psychology is not presently covered through Manitoba Health.

We do not offer direct billing, but we can provide a detailed invoice should you need one for insurance purposes.

Dr. Penfold is registered with the The Psychological Association of Manitoba (PAM) as a Registered Clinical Psychologist (C. PSYCH). It is the client's responsibility to contact their insurance company prior to the first session to ensure this designation is approved.

Most insurance companies accept this designation.

Should your insurance plan not cover this designation, you may be eligible for reimbursement through your HSA (Health Savings Account). Please check with your insurance provider ahead of time to confirm.
