Five Tips for Better Digestion

Five Tips for Better Digestion

Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Courtney Rae Jones, shares her top five tips for better digestion, nutrient absorption and elimination.

Good digestion is the key to optimal health. We are not just what we eat. We are what we eat, digest, absorb and then eliminate. Here are few of my favourite ways to boost digestion, aid the absorption of nutrients and ensure regular elimination:

👄 Take your time to eat and chew, chew, chew your food into a paste before swallowing. Digestion begins in the mouth. You don’t have teeth in your stomach :)

💩 Make time for regular bowel movements. This can be difficult for many of us due to our busy schedules. However, it’s really important to go to the bathroom when you feel the need. This helps with consistency and regular elimination. It’s critical that you regularly clear the waste.

💧Jump start your digestion with 2 cups of room-temperature water before having breakfast. Keep a water bottle beside your bed and slowly sip on the water while you get ready for your day. Hydration is especially important in the morning and will help you have regular bowel movements that are easy to pass.

🧘🏻‍♀️Try not to eat when you are stressed, rushed, upset, anxious or overtired. Stress can shut down digestion leading to constipation, gas and bloating. Tapping into the body’s “rest and digest” mode is key to good digestion. Try to take 5-10 deep belly breaths before taking your first bite of food to help relax your body.

👨🏽‍🍳 Prepare your own food at home. Merely the sight and smell of food while you prepare a meal boosts digestive power to help you break down an upcoming meal. About 20% of total stomach acid secretion occurs before food enters the stomach. Preparing your own food at home can help this process and reduce feelings of bloating and gas.
