Medications and Nutrient Deficiencies

Did you know that regularly taking certain medications can lead to nutrient deficiencies? 💊

Taking medication is often necessary to reduce symptoms and/or manage medical conditions. However, many pharmaceuticals come with a risk of nutrient deficiency - especially when taken long-term.

For example, individuals regularly taking proton-pump-inhibitors (PPIs) to manage ulcers, heartburn or acid reflux are at high risk of developing a deficiency in B12 and minerals (iron, zinc, copper, magnesium, etc). And, hormonal birth control can lead to deficiencies in vitamins B6 and B12, folic acid, zinc, magnesium and selenium.

Any nutrient deficiency can greatly impact the body in a number of ways - muscle cramps, fatigue, insomnia, hormonal imbalances, headaches, digestive issues, etc. 😴🤕😫

For most people, the risk of developing a nutrient deficiency is not a reason to stop taking medication. However, there are a few things that you can do a few things to protect yourself and ensure that you are getting all of the nutrients your body needs to function at its best.

🤍 Speak to a doctor, pharmacist, naturopathic doctor, nurse practitioner, dietitian or nutritionist. Most healthcare professionals know which medications can lead to specific nutrient deficiencies and can help you reduce the risks through dietary and supplement recommendations.

🤍 Get tested! When taking medication, it is important to see your doctor regularly for bloodwork to monitor nutrient levels. It’s recommended that you get tested every six months when taking medication regularly.

🤍 Monitor for symptoms. If you notice a change or a new development, see a healthcare professional to discuss whether or not the medications you are taking might be contributing to any nutrient deficiencies (ie. causing any side effects or symptoms your are experiencing.)
