What to Eat After a Massage

Fruits, veggies, protein and quality fats are key after a massage.

You’ve heard it before - likely from your massage therapist - but the best thing you can do after a massage is to hydrate well. Manipulation of the muscles can deplete them of water, so it’s very important to re-hydrate after a massage.

An adequate amount of water (4-6 cups) ensures that the liver and kidneys are able to process and eliminate the debris released during a massage from your system. Proper hydration also helps reduce the risk of muscles soreness and cramping after a massage while protecting your joints.

But what about food? Are there any foods that you can consume after a massage to reduce pain/cramping and facilitate the healing process? The answer is YES!

A meal rich in fruits and veggies is key after a massage, as they are rich in vitamins and minerals and contain a lot of water to help with rehydration. They are also a great source of antioxidants which are key in repair and recovery. A smoothie, salad, or stir-fry are excellent options after a massage - especially when paired with a good source of protein such as chicken, turkey, salmon, tuna, beef, tofu, tempeh, lentils, greek yogurt, or cottage cheese.

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, tuna, walnuts, chia seeds, and eggs are also very supportive after a massage due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Foods rich in magnesium such as dark chocolate, leafy greens, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds can promote continued relaxation and reduce cramping as it helps to relax muscles.

To maximize the benefits of a massage and reduce the risk of pain/cramping, I recommend avoiding alcoholic beverages, fried food and refined sugars for 24 hours post-treatment.
